The principal role of GS1 Ireland is to administer the licencing of GS1 numbers for barcoding and EDI mailboxes in Ireland. GS1 Standards enable organisations of any size to order, track, trace, deliver and pay for goods across the supply chain, anywhere in the world. GS1 is a not-for-profit, user governed, membership based organisation. Please note that barcode numbers issued by organisations other than an official GS1 Member Organisation (GS1 MO) may be rejected by trading partners resulting in additional costs for companies to re-package and re-list goods. GS1 provides a global database www.gepir.org in which all active barcode numbers and registered licence holder details can be verified. This licence validation tool is used by major Irish and international retailers to validate the barcode licence numbers submitted to them by their suppliers. GS1 Ireland is the only organisation in Ireland officially affiliated to the global organisation GS1 for the licencing of GS1 Identification Keys (barcode numbers) here locally.
GS1 global standards are the most widely used supply chain standards in the world. Over 2 million organisations across the globe use GS1 Standards, to identify, capture and share information about their products, services, locations and assets. GS1 is recognised by the International Standards Organisation (ISO), the European Standardisation Committee (CEN) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
